Idiopathic Scoliosis in Children and Adolescents

Idiopathic Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that mostly appears in late childhood or

adolescence around the time of a rapid growth spurt. The exact cause of this type of scoliosis is not

known. Instead of growing straight, the spine develops a curvature, usually in a "S" or "C" shape. The

bones of the spine are also slightly rotated. In some children the curve becomes more severe over time. The most common signs of the condition include a tilt or unevenness in the shoulders, hips, or waist, prominence of the ribs on one side, or having one leg that appears longer than the other.

How do we treat Idiopathic Scoliosis at Hands 2 Feet?

Our physiotherapist is trained in Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) specifically in

Schroth Best Practice. It is a conservative method of treatment based on current evidence and best

practice guidelines. Specific exercises are chosen according to the child’s unique spinal curve pattern.

Goals are to slow down or reduce curve progression, improve postural appearance, reduce pain, and

learn postures appropriate to the child’s curve to be used in everyday activities.

Contact Hands 2 Feet if you are concerned that your child has scoliosis or would like more information about Schroth Best Practice.

  • sensory processing and integration

Therapy goals are collaborated with the parents/caregivers. Therapists use a variety of treatment techniques to help their clients achieve their goals.  Home programming suggestions are offered with each session to optimize the child’s ability to achieve their goals.  We offer services         in-clinic, virtually, and in the home.

We are accepting new clients.  We do not have a wait list for physiotherapy.  There is currently a waiting list for occupational therapy and music therapy.
